Befriending

This service is for older people who live alone and are isolated, perhaps by bereavement, ill health, disability or loss of social networks. For each new referral a home visit will be carried out so that we can determine how Age Concern Newcastle can be of assistance.

Information will be supplied about the befriending services and about other help that we can offer. The Service Manager will discuss an individual’s needs and aspirations with them and match them with a volunteer who has similar interests.

I think it is so nice that we just need to pick up the phone and there is someone we can ask for advice. I am lucky I have a family that I can turn to, but there’s an awful lot of people who don’t.

All volunteers are mature, friendly people. They normally visit once a week and will provide support and friendship. Voluntary visitors may assist an older person to go out. Bereavement volunteers will continue to offer support until the service user feels able to cope.

Service users will be invited to attend social outings and discussion events. Our aim is to provide them with opportunities to contribute to their community to meet new people and to have fun!
